In order to celebrate what would have been Thomas Hardy's birthday on 2 June, Heathcote House, a boutique bed and breakfast in Dorset has taken inspiration from Dorset's literary son, and created the 'Hardy Cake', which is a honey and beer spice cake using local Dorset Badger ale.

Kate Guilor, owner of Heathcote House says; "As we are located at the heart of Hardy's country, we wanted to create something that our guests can enjoy. Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure worked in his aunt's bakery and baking is enjoying a massive resurgence, so we thought, why not make a literary cake!
The cake will be served to guests for the first time at Heathcote House during Hardy's Birthday Weekend on 1 and 2 June 2013.
