Let's hear it for the community champions of West Dorset!
Do you know of unsung heroes in West Dorset? Is it time they were told how much they mean to our community? If so, nominate them for a Community Champion Award before Christmas Eve.
The awards are run by West Dorset District Council and aim to recognise voluntary work done by local groups and organisations.
Nominations open from today and the categories are:
• Young Champion
• Community Champion
• Community Group
• Environmental Champion
Nominations close on Friday 24 December 2010. An awards ceremony will be held at the Corn Exchange in Dorchester on Wednesday 9 February 2011 where each Community Champion winner will receive a small cash prize and a framed certificate.
There is also a separate award category to nominate local commercial businesses that have given their support to local community group.
West Dorset District Council Chairman Ronald Coatsworth said: “This award is to recognise all the unsung heroes of the district.
“If you know someone who gives up their time voluntarily for their community then nominate them for a Community Champion Award.”
Nomination forms will be available by calling Sue Bickle on 01305 252314 and from tourist information centres, town council offices, district council offices and atwww.dorsetforyou.com/communitychampions.

Comments
This is just such a good award, because it really lets people in the local community know who the unsung heroes really are. I think it's much better than the proper 'honours' system where far too many things go to so-called celebrities or hangers on. It should not be in the Queen's gift or the PM's to award them an honour. This is why schemes like this are really important and worthwhile.
