This Sunday sees a May Day rally at Dorchester’s Borough Gardens.

There’ll be family fun and entertainment as well as trades union support for workers in these hard times.

Bands and acts include The Skimmity Hitchers, The Andy Grant Trio, Tom Caulfield, Thomas and the Mockups, Bag of Rats and Si Jubb.

Organisers stress that the event is more of a picnic in the park and is not a political event. The focus is on family fun.

May Day has been a traditional day of celebration throughout the centuries, pre-dating Christianity. However, in more recent times, May Day has been celebrated as international workers’ day. The English May Day bank holiday was created in England in 1978.
