Picnic at the Dorchester Community Farm

Transition Town Dorchester invites the residents of Dorchester and Poundbury to a picnic on August 15th on
the site of Dorchester’s new Community
Farm.
The Duchy of Cornwall have generously granted Transition Town Dorchester a lease on 2 acres of land at Parkway Farm to the South of
Weymouth College Construction Centre at Poundbury to establish a community
garden and farm for Dorchester residents.
At a time when there are 94,124 people on
allotment waiting lists around England this is an opportunity for all those who would like to have access to a green space
where they can get involved in the various aspects of the farm or just enjoy
the social element of a relaxed community space.
Suggested projects so far include a pond and
wildlife garden, an ecobuilding, raised beds for vegetable growing, a hen coop,
a picnic and social area, a children’s area, a herb garden and a sensory garden
for the sight impaired, to name but a few. It is envisaged that the site will
have disabled access.
Work is about to begin on the green field site
so the picnic will be an opportunity for Dorchester residents to have a say on
how they would like the community farm to evolve.
Everyone is welcome to the picnic and to get
involved with the farm and all those with an interest in becoming involved in
the planning and set up stage of the farm should go to http://www.transitiontowndorchester.org/communityfarm.html for more information.
The picnic is from 12.30 to 3pm on Sunday
August 15th – bring a rug and picnic (maybe something to share). Pets,
footballs and frisbies etc are also welcome.
