Allthough we live in Blandford St.Mary we have eaten out at the Engine room regularly. I think we must have tried almost everything on the menu. The staff ar great and the atmosphere lovely with a mixed bag og ages. The way the food is served is wonderful - we hardly eat out anywhere else. Wonderful. Sunshine 21.07.11

Thank you for your comments which are fully taken on board and shared with the staff as we aim to ensure that we provide great food and service. Feedback is always useful so we can put things right that are obviously not. Thank you

We used to think this was a very good place to eat or just have a coffee but recently, the last six months or so, both the service and the food have been well below par.
The service can be awfully slow at times, we have waited at least twenty minutes to be served on occasions, even when it hasn't been busy, and have seen many people leave after waiting to be served for too long. I have to say too that when you are finally served the coffees seem to take an eternity - they do seem to have the slowest coffee machine in Dorchester!
The food too has not been up to it's usual standard. We have had breakfasts which seem to have just been thrown onto the plate as well as being extremely 'dry'. And have also found the once famed salads to be well below par in terms of presentation and quality of the food- the chicken and bacon salad used to be served with the chicken and bacon in small mouthful sized pieces, the last one I had a couple of weeks ago was basically a large lump of chicken and a couple of slices of bacon totally lacking finesse or presentation skills.
When I hear of better service and food returning to The Engine Room, I too will return, but for now their very close competitors get my vote!!....

The Engine Room is a great place to meet friends for coffee and a cake. If you're lucky you can sink into the leather sofa and enjoy a capuccino. Afterwards, pop next door for a wander around the garden centre. It's a great way to spend an afternoon.

Visited The Engine Room for the 1st time last night, hearty food with a difference served up in an authentic atmosphere by very pleasant staff. Our main course was Steak and Kidney Pie in a suet pastry along with potatoes with a side bowl of vegetables. The size of the serving meant that we enjoyed a substantial break between courses and then shared a vanilla ice cream with a thick chocolate sauce. Yummy!

My husband and I had a Steak meal each, and the chef was happy to make the steak plain, as that's how we like it. We have never had such a well presented meal. The chips were no ordinary cooked chips, they are in a league of their own. We wanted mushrooms, which he was also happy to cook for us. The salad was well presented, and the added extras of veg and onions was delicious and more than enough to fill us up completely. The steak(we asked for it to be well done) was cooked to perfection. You really do get your money's worth. We were both so full we were unable to manage a sweet. Next time we eat there we will ask for a smaller portion, so we can try the sweet menu too. I was told by the very helpful waitress that if people want smaller portions they are happy to supply you with them, (and you don't have to pay full price for it). Top mark's for the best place to eat in Dorchester.
